Watermill Express Essay Contest

Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction Celeste Sanchez announced that Watermill Express is sponsoring an essay contest for San Benito and Harlingen students.  A total of 10 scholarships (totaling $300, but maturing to $500 each) will be provided to students.  Photos of the winners will be placed on banners and the students submitting the winning essays will have a class celebration.

Open Forum

  • A question was raised regarding the purchase of Math Olympics T-shirts for sponsors.   Schools are no longer able to use certain accounts to purchase shirts (due to Internal Revenue regulations), however, they can use activity funds and sponsors can use personal funds to purchase shirts.
  • A concern regarding laptop computers was raised.  It was noted that the concerns will be addressed with Director of Technology Chand Taneja.
  • A concern regarding substitute pay was addressed.  It was noted that substitutes at Veterans Memorial and San Benito High School work one additional hour than those working at other campuses and receive the same amount of pay.
  • Concerns regarding the DATE grant were raised. It was noted that the criteria does not appear to be fair to all teachers.  The district is currently on Cycle 2 of the DATE grant.  Staff Development Coordinator Melonie Flores will be presenting the information to campuses.
  • A concern was raised about workshop sessions being cancelled due to lack of participation.  The need to offer more training sessions for Smart Boards/Promethean Boards was raised.
  • A suggestion was made to provide supplemental (insurance) services for counseling, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, depression, etc. for employees and/or their dependents.
  • A question was raised regarding regularly scheduled Superintendent’s Advisory Council  meetings. (The meetings are usually held on the second Thursday of the month at 3 p.m. and one public meeting is held in the evening during the month of February.)
  • A discussion on the 90-minute reading blocks for pre-kinder and kinder students took place. At some schools, library or computer lab assistants provide help with the students. On a related item, it was noted that those attending a required training were unable to get into the scheduled training site due to the fact that the doors were locked.  It was noted that the security guard on duty did not open the building, however, the issue has been addressed and arrangements have been made in advance to ensure that this does not happen again.
  • Discussion regarding the H1N1 flu took place. It was noted that doctor’s offices are treating individuals with symptoms as if they have the H1N1.  Dates for immunizations will be made available at three campuses, including Dr. C.M. Cash, Riverside Middle School and Berta Cabaza Middle School during the evening hours.  Discussion regarding proper cleaning and sanitizing took place.
