Staff Development Coordinator Melonie Flores presented the Summer Staff Development schedule. Registration is available via the ERO system, Flores said. She noted that a social studies session will be added and that Promethean Board training is being offered. Exchange hours and/or stipends will be provided. SAC members approved the Staff Development schedule.
District Comprehensive Needs Assessment Plan
Dr. Margarita Greer presented the District Comprehensive Needs Assessment Plan. During the presentation, concerns were raised regarding the district’s loss of student enrollment. Questions were raised regarding the steps that San Benito CISD is taking to retain students in the district. It was noted that San Benito CISD offers technology, updated science labs and provides teachers with Promethean Boards for instruction. Services for gifted and talented students and parents are also offered.
Federal Program Planning Amounts
Dr. Greer presented planning amounts for 2009-2010 totaling $8,222,252 for federal programs.
The district anticipates on receiving $3.7 million from the stimulus money. The district plans on using the money to build science labs, and provide science technology materials. Technology such as Promethean Boards, etc. has to be included as part of the plan. Approximately $1.9 million will be earmarked to continue providing the After school Program. The stimulus money cannot be used to create positions, however, it can be used for science labs, software, upgrading computers and providing training.
Approximately $1.4 million will be provided to the campuses and $500,000 will be earmarked to replace computers. Suggestions and comments regarding the plan should be forwarded to Dr. Greer.
Summer Camps
The 21st Century grant requires the district to continue academic and recreational activities for students during the summer. Host campuses for this year’s summer camp is Berta Cabaza Middle School. The camp will include students from Landrum, Ed Downs, La Paloma, Veterans Memorial Academy, Miller Jordan, Fred Booth, Frank Roberts, Sullivan and Berta Cabaza Middle School.
Optional summer camp (non-grant sites and payment-based) include host Dr. Raul Garza Jr. Elementary. Dr. Garza will also operate a daycare center from June-August. Besides Dr. Garza, the summer camp will also serve students from Dr. C.M. Cash, Rangerville, La Encantada, and Judge Oscar De La Fuente Elementary. (Transportation will only be provided to the host campus for La Paloma Elementary).
