Innovative Course for SBHS

SAC members reviewed the new high school course, “Analytical Integrated Mathematics” for 2008-09.  The proposed high school course allows for students to participate in a more rigorous curriculum.  Students will learn to solve and model robotic design problems.  They will use mathematical methods to represent and analyze problems involving data acquisition, spatial applications, electrical measurements, manufacturing processes, materials engineering, mechanical drives, pneumatics, process control systems, quality control, and robotics with computer programming.  The course will be presented to the San Benito CISD Board of Trustees for approval.

Open Forum

  • A question was raised regarding pay raises for team leaders and department heads. Limón said the item would be reviewed during budget time.
  • A question regarding policy for cell phone and IPOD use was raised.  Limón said administration would study the policy. A suggestion was made to appoint a committee to study the concerns and review the current policy. Planner/Evaluator Ruben Franco is in charge of policy-making.
  • A question was raised regarding website blocks on the Internet.  It was noted that teachers and students rely on the use of the Internet for instructional purposes and teachers and students have a difficult time doing research on poetry, music lyrics, and plays due to blocks.  Limón said that the Technology Department reported that abuse of the system was taking place and that too many people were watching music videos and listening to satellite radio, etc.
  • A concern was raised regarding pre-kinder and kinder students from Judge Oscar De La Fuente not having an opportunity to attend presentations from visiting authors at the campus.  (It was noted that the decision on which grade levels to include at the presentation sessions is made at the campus level).
  • A question was raised on whether Judge Oscar De La Fuente Elementary would be classified as a country school due to the location of the city limits sign.  It was stated that the school is located within the city limits.
  • A question was raised on whether the district plans to construct an auditorium for performances from conjunto, mariachi, orchestra, etc.  It was explained that the district would be able to use Instructional Facilities Allotment monies, however, the seating capacity would only accommodate 150 people.  It was noted that the district has been studying different funding options and discussing their concerns with legislators.
  • A question was raised on whether the district could televise the welcome ceremony at three or four different sites throughout the district. It was noted that there are certain technology limitations and that the district is still small enough to continue to meet at one location.  A suggestion was made to have the individual campuses offer transportation to the site via a school bus.
