Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) Report presented
Planner/Evaluator Ruben Franco presented the district's Academic Excellence Indicator (AEIS) System Report (2007-07) during a required public meeting held in the evening. Published annually by the Texas Education Agency, the AEIS Report contains information on student performance at the campus and district level. The report also contains campus performance objectives and student demographics as well as information on the district's finances, staffing, and program expenditures. Franco said that the district's goal is to reach state recognized status in 2008.
Approval of Staff Development
Celeste Sanchez, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction, presented the Staff Development sessions for Spring, 2008. SAC members voted to approve the sessions as presented.
Child Nutrition Program presentation
Jana Landrum, Child Nutrition Program director, responded to questions about school meals. At a previous meeting, Carol Evans had inquired about sodium content and expressed concerns over the increasing rates of diabetes. Landrum stated that the concerns are valid and responded that the state does not have any restrictions on sodium content. Landrum said that the district has modified recipes and eliminated salt from the recipes in order to address this concern. The menus are analyzed and checked for calories, protein, fat, etc. Landrum explained that the school district has to abide by state standards and added that child nutrition personnel are encouraging the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Open Forum
- Superintendent of Schools Antonio G. Limón announced that the district is currently in the process of planting trees at the John F. Barron Administration Building parking lot, at the request of Board President Bob Tumberlinson. The trees will be planted to honor school employees that have passed away. Their names will be inscribed on a granite marker that will be placed at the base of the tree. The campuses and/or departments would cover expenses associated with the cost of the markers. The goal is to begin this project during the month of February as part of Arbor Day.
- Jose Morales, a parent from Ed Downs Elementary, expressed positive remarks on the progress of the school’s cafeteria. He also stated that the school’s Parent Teacher Organization is willing to cover costs associated with the purchase of a plexiglass covering for the canopies. Limón said he would address this suggestion with the architects and members of the Building Committee.
- Eddie Ramirez inquired about the possibility of increasing participation by sending more San Benito CISD students to participate in the University of Texas-Brownsville’s Bridge (dual) Program. Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction Celeste Sanchez said the district signed a contract for participation in a program with TSTC in Harlingen. Transportation costs posed problems, Sanchez said.
- Roberta Kelly, a teacher from Miller Jordan Middle School, inquired about University Interscholastic League pay. She said that UIL events are over, however, the teachers have been told they will not receive their UIL checks until May. Kelly also addressed concerns regarding lessons for students sent to the Joe Callandret Positive Redirection Center. Teachers want to know why PRC teachers do not do the lessons and teach the lessons instead of the home campus sending lessons. Sanchez responded by stating that C-Scope requires hands on and doing C-Scope tailored per each grade level is impossible. Limon added that it is ideal so that the child’s home teacher can stay connected to the campus teacher.
- A question was raised on what measures our district is taking to prevent a similar occurrence with Weslaco’s basketball team. The issue was a residency/recruitment issue.
- Rene Garcia spoke briefly about the task of the calendar committee. The committee has agreed on school calendars and will be proposing Calendars A, B and C.
- Arnold Castillo, a teacher at Fred Booth, reported that the campus is currently participating in the U.S. Healthier Schools Challenge. The school has a running club that students can join.
