2007-08 School Calendar
Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction Celeste Sanchez explained that the purpose of the SAC meeting was to present the proposed calendars to committee members prior to presenting it to the Board of Trustees for final approval at the evening meeting. Members of the Calendar Committee presented the three proposed school calendars for the 2007-08 school year. SAC members reviewed and compared the differences.
Calendar C was favored by the majority of the employees. A concern was raised on how to pay for overtime for a work day scheduled Saturday, May 31 for hourly employees. A concern was raised over the observance of Labor Day after classes have only been in session one full week after starting school on first day of classes Monday, Aug. 27. Superintendent of Schools Antonio G. Limón said one option would be to move the May 9 weather make-up day to Saturday, May 31.
Another suggestion was made to omit Labor Day so that employees would not have to work on Saturday, May 31. Parent Jose Morales said removing Labor Day from the calendar takes planning/family time away. Sanchez said Jan. 18 could also be considered a work day.
Planner/Evaluator Ruben Franco said the hours for the hourly employees could be adjusted during the last week of school to avoid paying for overtime. Limón said that 500 employees did not vote and that the outcome could have been different if they had voted. Victor Rosa said committee members should respect the wishes of the employees. Virginia Ramirez thanked the committee for working on the calendar. After a considerable amount of discussion, committee members were informed that the board would ultimately make the final decision on the calendar.

- Janie Silva, a teacher at Judge Oscar De La Fuente, said both Riverside Middle School have 500 students, while Berta Cabaza Middle School has 900. Limón said the district needs to redefine the boundaries. If one of the schools has more students, the school will have to add more teams.
- Victor Rosas asked about the district’s plan to retain teachers. Mr. Limón said that the district is attempting to retain teachers by offering through the services being provided through the employee health clinic, tutorial stipends and the Teacher Retirement System.
- Virginia Ramirez inquired whether there was a shortage on substitute teachers. Mr. Limón said the district is experiencing a shortage. Teachers received $100 if they are certified and $50 if they are non-certified, with a one-day training.
- James Kohn, a teacher at Riverside Middle School, asked whether there would be an Afterschool Program at Miller Jordan Middle School next year. He was told that the program would be offered. Kohn also noted that at Riverside Middle School, there is no Internet in the classrooms. Mr. Limón said the district is planning utilizing PCs.
- Sam Mendez, assistant principal at Judge Oscar De La Fuente, asked whether Miller Jordan Middle School would be ready. Mr. Limón responded that the school would be ready for next school year.
- Parent Jose Morales inquired on whether the walkway to the cafeteria was covered. Limón said it was not due to the existing easement.
