Superintendent’s Report

Superintendent of Schools Antonio G. Limón announced overnight trips as follows: Berta Cabaza Middle School Afterschool dance team to travel to San Antonio, Austin and San Marcos June 22-24.

Trustees take oath of office; board re-organizes

Trustees Bob Tumberlinson, Oscar De La Fuente Jr. and Yliana G. Rodriguez took the oath of office.  Tumberlinson and De La Fuente were re-elected to serve another term, while Rodriguez earned the seat formerly held and vacated by trustee Roel Villarreal, who decided not to seek re-election. 

Trustees voted on re-organizing the board, and after voting on the three officer positions, the offices remain unchanged.  Joe G. Gonzalez will remain president, while Oscar Medrano will continue as vice-president and Manuel Gonzales Jr. will continue serving as secretary.

Committee appointments will be determined at a later date.

Summer Work Week Schedule

San Benito CISD employees will begin working the 10-hour four day work week beginning on Monday, June 1 and ending Thursday, July 30.  Employees will begin the work day at 7 a.m. and end the work day at 5:30 or 6 p.m., depending on the length of the lunch break.

The July 4th Holiday falls on Saturday this year.  Since employees will be working the 4-day week/10-hour day, the district will observe the July 4th Holiday on Thursday, July 2. Employees will work Monday, June 29 through Wednesday, July 1 and have the day off on Monday, July 6.  All employees working during the summer will return to work Tuesday, July 7-July 10 in order to complete their 4-day week/10 hour work day. 

Public Comment

Jesus “Chuy” Aguilera spoke to trustees about the recent elections, while George Short spoke about the bible course being proposed for San Benito High School students.

School Construction Report

Lisandro Ramon, construction consultant, presented a brief construction report.  Ramon reported that approximately 70 percent of the block work has been completed at Sullivan Elementary. 

At Rangerville, the underground chill water pipe has been installed.

At San Benito High School, all major equipment has been delivered, and 80 percent of the chill water system has been installed.  The science wing is one month behind schedule due to a problem with the acid-waste system, Ramon reported.

The work for Landrum Elementary will be submitted for board approval at the June board meeting.

2009 Summer Camp schedule announced

The 21st Century grant requires the district to continue academic and recreational activities for students during the summer.  Host campuses for this year’s summer camp is Berta Cabaza Middle School.  The camp will include students from Landrum, Ed Downs, La Paloma, Veterans Memorial Academy, Miller Jordan, Fred Booth, Frank Roberts, Sullivan and Berta Cabaza Middle School.

Optional summer camp (non-grant sites and payment-based) include host Dr. Raul Garza Jr. Elementary.  Dr. Garza will also operate a daycare center from June-August.  Besides Dr. Garza, the summer camp will also serve students from Dr. C.M. Cash, Rangerville, La Encantada, and Judge Oscar De La Fuente Elementary. (Transportation will only be provided to the host campus for La Paloma Elementary).

In other matters trustees approved...

  • Bids on uniform services;
  • A request from the City of Los Indios to lease land;
  • A request for payment of compensation for employees during the school closure due to the H1N1 Flu Virus;
  • 2008-09 budget amendments;
  • Budget transfers;
  • Implementing a bible literacy course for San Benito High School students;
  • A request to implement the new courses Sports Medicine I and Sports Medicine II for high school students;
  • Accepting the new high school courses Plumbing I & II;
  • Accepting training Model C tech broadband academy for instructional purposes;
  • Accepting software for synergistic modules for instructional purposes;
  • Board Minutes;
  • The teacher appraisal calendar for 2009-2010;
  • A request for the Texas Education Agency for missed instructional days (waiver for May 4-8, 2009); and
  • Board Policy Update 84.


    Executive Session

    During executive session trustees reviewed/discussed pending litigations, heard a report on personnel, rescinded the non-renewal of term contract and approved the resignation of a teacher.  Trustees also approved the purchase of 22-acres to be used as a site for a future campus.
