Public Hearing

Trustees held a public hearing prior to the regular board meeting to announce the 2007-08 federal programs planning entitlements. Dr. Margarita Y. Greer, director of Federal Programs, reported the amounts for federal funds being utilized to supplement the instructional program for all students attending a Title I school wide campus.
 
Dr. Greer announced that the Federal Programs planning amounts are as follows:

Title I, Part A $4,700,821
Title I, Part C $1,018,751
Title I, Part D, Subpart 2 (Delinquent Youth) $65,926
Title II, Part D (Technology) $48,444
Title IV, Part A (Safe & Drug Free Schools & Communities) $57,279
Title II, Part A; TPTR $791,368

Superintendent’s Report

Superintendent of Schools Antonio G. Limón announced overnight trips as follows: San Benito High School Skills USA Media Technology State and District Officer Training, Corpus Christi-June 6-13; and San Benito High School Skills USA National Leadership and Skills Championship-Kansas City, Missouri, June 22-28.

Summer Work Week Schedule

Trustees approved the summer workweek schedule as follows: The 10-hour workweek will begin on Monday, June 2 and end July 31.  Work hours will be Monday through Thursday 7 a.m.-5:30p.m. if taking a 30-minute lunch or until 6 p.m. if taking an hour lunch.

Fourth of July Holiday

The July 4th holiday falls on a Friday this year.  Since employees are working a 10-hour workday, the district will observe it on Thursday, July 3.  Thursday will be traded off for Friday so that employees will have a long weekend, therefore, all employees will work Monday, June 30 through Wednesday, July 2 and be off Thursday and Friday, July 3-4.


Employees will also be trading off Friday, July 11 for Monday July 7 in order to give employees a five-day weekend.  Employees will then return to work on Tuesday, July 8 through Friday, July 11 for the 10 hour, four-day workweek. 

July Board Meeting

The regular board meeting for the month of July will be held July 15.

Under Superintendent’s Report, trustees reviewed disbursements and disbursements by organization.


Trustees take Oath of Office; board reorganizes

Justice of the Peace (Precinct 7) Dan Sanchez administered the oath of office to San Benito CISD trustees Manuel Gonzales Jr. and Oscar Medrano.  After the board re-organized its officers, Joe G. Gonzalez was elected to serve as president, Medrano was elected to serve as vice-president and Gonzales retained the title of board secretary.  Outgoing board president Bob Tumberlinson expressed his appreciation.  Incoming president Gonzalez thanked his fellow board members, including former trustee Orlando (O.J.) Gonzalez.  He also thanked the voters for approving the $37 million bond election.  “I know that with this board we will have a very successful year,” he said. 

Public Comment

Student Debbie Rodriguez addressed trustees on four-day school week proposal.  She discussed the benefits involved.  She also stated that she had gathered 200 signatures from students who favored the idea.   She indicated that she had sample schedules from other school districts that follow a four-day school week.
 

School Construction

(Lizandro Ramon provided trustees with a brief construction report on the following campuses: Miller Jordan Middle School (lights in shower area) and Ed Downs Elementary (cafeteria).  The 2008 bond projects are next on the list. Trustee Roel Villarreal inquired about saving energy at the Sonny Brazil Complex.

In other matters trustees approved...

  • Bid on paint products and supplies;
  • the 2007-08 budget amendments;
  • budget transfers;
  • accepting the Tobacco Compliance Program grant funds, if awarded;
  • The 2008 Summer Camp Schedule;
  • Board Minutes;
  • The Texas Education Agency general waiver for the 2008-09 through 2010-2011 school years;
  • The SB CISD Teacher Appraisal Calendar for 2008-09.


    During Executive Session, trustees reviewed pending litigations, heard a report on personnel and addressed an item pertaining to the settlement  agreement of Jose Perez.
