Superintendent’s Report
Superintendent of Schools Antonio G. Limón presented an overnight trip request from San Benito High School to travel to compete at the Octathlon Round One Academic competition April 25-26. Trustees also reviewed disbursements and disbursements by organization. Limón also presented an investment report for Dec. 1, 2007-Feb. 29, 2008.
Presentation of TEEG (Cycle III) Incentive Grant
Trustees heard reports from three campus principals, including Joel Wood from Riverside Middle School, Tim Moon from Judge Oscar De La Fuente Elementary and Elaine Sandell from Veterans Memorial Academy. All three campuses qualified for Texas Educator Excellence Grant (TEEG) grant monies. VMA received $130,000, Riverside Middle School qualified for $100,000 and Judge Oscar De La Fuente Elementary qualified for $75,000. The funds will be divided according to a distribution plan developed at the campus level.
Presentation on ParentLink and VSI.net
Director of Instructional Technology Dallas Smetter conducted a presentation on ParentLink and VSI.net. ParentLink is designed to offer outbound messaging via telephone to district staff and parents. The system will make automatic daily calls to parents regarding student attendance. Through the VSI.net program, parents will be able to log on to the district’s website and view current and historical data on the child. Parents will be able to view attendance, schedules, grades, discipline concerns, homework assignments and more.
Public Comment
Two employees, Juanita Garcia and Jesus Hernandez, addressed trustees on matters related to the distribution of the Texas Educator Excellence Grant (TEEG) grant monies. Both claimed that they did not feel that the distribution method was fair and that teachers formerly employed at Riverside Middle School, but now working at Miller Jordan Middle School, should have received those grant monies, also.
In other matters trustees approved...
Budget transfers;
2007-08 Budget Amendments;
Increasing the starting salaries for part time and substitute employees;
A request to accept donated book shelves;
The purchase of LUCHA (Language Learners at the University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Hispanic Achievement);
