Superintendent’s Report

The San Benito CISD Board of Trustees held a Public Hearing to discuss the 2006-07 Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) Report.  The AEIS Report, published annually by the Texas Education Agency, contains information on student performance at the campus and district level.  The report, presented by the district’s Planner/Evaluator Ruben Franco, contains campus performance objectives, student demographics, finances, staffing, and program expenditures.

Trustees approved overnight trips as follows: San Benito High School Decathlon Team Regional Academic Competition-Corpus Christi, Jan. 18-19; San Benito High School Future Farmers of America, San Antonio, Feb.8-16; San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy/San Benito High School Media Technology Skills USA Legislative Day, Feb. 9-11; San Benito High School Choir, All-State Choir competition, Feb. 13-17, San Antonio; San Benito High School Varsity Baseball Tournament, Robstown, Tx. Feb. 21-23; San Benito High School Drill Team (Belles) American Dance Team Regional Dance Competition, Feb. 29-March 2, Peggy Wagner High School, San Antonio.

 
Special Recognition

The San Benito CISD Board of Trustees honored members of the Veterans Memorial Academy Chess Team.  They include members Jose Ricardo Garcia, Juan Millan, Michael Salinas, Joseph Ortega, Andres Garcia, Christian Gomez, Ezequiel Lopez, Rigoberto Merida, Jovano Camacho, Martha Lejarazu, David Camacho and Jorge Proo, chess coach Manuel Gonzalez, After School Program site coordinator Cynthia Rystedt and Principal Elaine Sandell.  The team earned a second place finish at the 11th Annual Texas Grade and Collegiate Championship at the Woodlands and a fourth place finish at nationals at the National Scholastic K-12/Collegiate Championship Dec. 7-9 in Houston.
 
 
San Benito CISD schools honored the district’s board of trustees as part of School Board Appreciation Month, as declared by Governor Rick Perry.  Coordinated by the district’s Community Relations Office, the event featured student representatives from each campus presenting appreciation items to trustees for their service to public education.  Members of the San Benito High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Ray Chapa and Albert Salazar, provided entertainment.  A reception was held in their honor. 

School Construction Report

Construction Consultant Lisandro Ramon presented a report on construction projects. Ramon reported that the Ed Downs Elementary cafeteria is 90 percent complete.  The board will be able to participate in a walk-through in approximately two weeks.  At Miller Jordan Middle School, punchlist items for mechanical, electrical and plumbing are still pending.

In other matters trustees approved...

  • A request for approval of 2007 Annual Financial and Compliance Report
  • A request for approval to pay some teachers TTEG Cycle 2 incentive monies (less than $3,000);
  • A request for approval for budget transfers;
  • A request for approval of 2007-08 budget amendments;
  • A request for approval to accept the new high school course “Emergency Communications” for the 2007-08 school year;
  • A request for approval of board minutes;
  • A request for approval to adopt and accept the 2006-07 Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) Report received from the Texas Education Agency; and
  • A request for approval of the 2008 Annual Membership dues to the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB).
